Elly at a Field Trial with Paul Hi.   I'm Paul Toal of Altiquin Dogs. Back in 1986  I joined the UK and Irish Field Trial competition circuit because of my competitive nature, love of field trialing, and vast experience in raising and training sporting dogs.

To compete against the best handlers and trainers from Ireland and the British mainland gives me such a thrill, not to mention a constant source of valuable new insights. To participate as a Field Trial judge for the Irish Kennel Club adds an awesome responsibility to my endeavors with dogs.

From the very beginning our primary goal at Altiquin Dogs has been to cultivate and nurture impeccable Irish and UK pedigree dogs, Labrador Retrievers and Spaniels. With the tremendous amount of experience we have had in professional dog training and handling, we are able to objectively evaluate our litters and prospective breeding stock.

We breed only those dogs that pass our exacting standards for natural hunting ability, intelligence, physical soundness, temperament, honesty and conformation. We especially value and seek to cultivate calm, quiet, collected dogs with great noses.

Altiquin believes that the Irish and UK trialing and sporting dog community could benefit from Online Irish Field Trialing Calendars & Results. Our website is exclusive.

Our focus is on field trialing. The space on our website is reserved for dogs who are either Field Trial Competitors, Trial Award Winners, or Field Trial Stock Pedigree Pups. Our objective is to serve and assist Field Trialing Clubs and Associations in their administrative duties and promotional activities.

Pat Greene, Spaniel man and Paul ToalAltiquin understands the needs of the field trialing and shooting man and woman. We understand and share that need for a high-quality canine working companion. Therefore, we are actively working to create an online meeting place, IrishFieldTrials.com, for all of us who seek such excellence.

Although still being developed, we would like to *welcome* you to the Online Irish Field Trial Reports page and the Online Irish Field Trial Results page, both of which are part of the new Online Irish Field Trialing Network. You'll find monthly calendars of Irish Field Trial events (starting with January 2002), as well as an Irish Field Trial Club Directory that covers both Northern Ireland and the Republic.

WORKSHOPS: From July 10th to July 14th, 2003 Paul took his knowledge and experience in handling working and sporting Labradors to Sweden at the request of Ms Bitte Sjöblom of ASKRIKES KENNEL to help facilitate a Field Trialing Training Session in Vadstena, Sweden. Ms Bitte Sjöblom was a most gracious hostess and a talented organiser/coordinator of this entire event.

Topics covered during this workshop included:

  • A session in the Art of Handling a Dog in the Field
  • How to Train Puppies and Novice Dogs
  • Conducting a Working Dog Field Test
  • A Dog's Perspective on... *vision (color, distance)  *handling (voice, whistle, signals)  *mixed signals  *wind & weather  *physical fitness/stamina/muscle tone  *trust & confidence.
  • The Human Perspective on...  *quietness & poise  *handling (voice, whistle, signals)  *mixed signals  *wind & weather  *physical fitness/stamina/muscle tone  *trust & confidence.

Paul's itinerary for the Friday session looked something like this: Introduction to Field Work. Steadiness Work. Water Work. Heel Work. Straight Lines leading onto Blinds. Whistle Work and Taking Direction. Trailing Scent.

Then, on Saturday, he concentrated on Dog Handling Skills. This he did through a number of tests (such as jumping over a wall, a fence, crossing ditches, crossing straight lanes/paths/roads, entering cover, retrieving in water, marked retrieves, blinds, distractions, double marks, etc). He offered feedback on the positive skills of each handler and the reactions of their dog under different circumstances.

The Workshop was a grand success and a very profitable learning experience and a source of enjoyment and encouragement to all the attendees.

For additional information about this Workshop or a recommendation, kindly contact Ms Bitte Sjöblom on E-mail at: bitte.sjoblom@telia.com. Her website is: Askrikes hemsida: www.askrike.nu

We personally care for every aspect of the operation. Working dogs are our passion.

With over 16 years experience in raising and training sporting dogs we have the expertise to provide you with a great hunting companion, or excellent raw material, depending upon your needs.

Paul will personally mentor you and train your dog to be a better hunting companion on duck, pheasant, woodcock, snipe, grouse, and rabbit.

As a true working and sporting dog lover, Paul will also answer any of your individual questions freely. Simply drop us an email and we'll respond personally.

Because of our daily involvement with working dogs, training schedules, handling, trialing, and breeding, Altiquin Dogs frequently has pedigree pups, as well as partly-trained and fully-trained Labrador Retrievers and Spaniels for sale.
