Hand-raised and socialized at our home on Altiquin acreage: Altiquin Dogs in County Leitrim, Ireland is primarily interested in breeding to improve Labrador Retriever bloodlines for our own competitive trialing purposes in the UK and Ireland. For those outside of the Irish and British Isles, Altiquin Dogs willingly assists in importing our bloodlines into your country.

Stylish and athletic, each puppy is bred for health, intelligence, temperament, honesty, keen noses and working ability.

We only breed to develop our own competitive training and trialing stock. And, we sell only those that are surplus to our requirements.

Although we would like to guaranteed our pups for hips, we cannot and refer you to the extensive medical literature on the subject: About Hips and More About Hips.

More specifically, we are referring to the unfortunate fact that 2 out of 10 puppies born of so called HD-free parents will develop hip dysplasia. Even when using the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) method of hip evaluation, sadly there is still a 20-25 percent chance of producing a puppy with CHD (canine hip dysplasia).
One of Solo + Jake Pups ... Photo taken on Oct. 1, 2006
Moreover, dogs must be two years old or older to get an OFA hip evaluation rating. With the PennHip Method of evaluating a dog's hips, all x-rays must be taken under anesthesia to provide the greatest amount of muscle relaxation. There is a risk involved. Some dogs never come out of the anesthesia.

However, we DO guarantee that both sire and dam have excellent hip scores. Naturally, we guarantee our puppies for health and quality pedigrees. In addition to our rigourous, on-going health maintenance program, each pup is individually examined by a veterinarian before departing Altiquin for its new home.

At Altiquin Dogs, it is health and bloodlines of proven field trialing quality, not quantity that matters. Read about a pup's life at Altiquin below....

We are not commercial breeders and our puppies are very important to us. Each year we have only ONE litter.

Solo's 1st Litter : Arrived on Thurs./ 24 AUGUST 2006: Having had a very successful end of season with our FTCH ALTIQUIN EGAN - Jake (who as a 3-year-old qualified for the Irish Championship 2005), we decided to use this opportunity to blend Jake and Holly's daughter Solo, who was pick-of-the-litter out of Willowyck Ruff, and aptly named ALTIQUIN PRIDE.

We are very impressed and pleased with this litter and Solo's mothering skills: 5 boys and 7 girls. All the same size: plump; and, ALL SHINY BLACK.

Gem's 1st Litter : Arrived on 5th AUGUST 2005: This year we chose Mr. Damian Newman's Irish FTCH MYRETON DIABLO of GLENLOCH as our stud. This stud is a tremendous game-finding dog. He won 1st Place in the 2004 Irish Retriever Championship. Retrospectively speaking, he continues to win... placing 3rd in the 2005 Irish Retriever Championship; and then once again, winning 1st Place in the 2006 Irish Retriever Championship. He truly is a GREAT dog.

Gem, aka: ALTIQUIN BREEZE, is Holly's daughter and pick-of-the-litter out of GB FTCH Craighorn Bracken, Winner of the 2001 British Retriever Championship. Her temperament is superb. Supremely gentle and willing, as well as coming along well in her field training. She carries both Yellow and Fox Red.

We are pleased to announce 7 new Altiquin pups: 3 Males + 4 Bitches.

Holly's September 12, 2004  Litter:  This year we chose Tess Lawrence's FTCH WILLOWYCK RUFF as our stud. Not only did he place 2nd in the British Championship 2003, he was also THE Top Retriever for the following season (2004). We had 8 BLACKS. They were all big, strong pups. Our camera jammed while filming this litter. We have yet to recover the prints.

We have kept 3 pups: 2 dogs and 1 bitch for ourselves. We have started working with them and they all have a very strong drive for retrieving. We will train them to Field Trialing Standards and compete with them.

Holly's July 20, 2003 Litter:  We are so pleased with the retrieving ability of last year's pups that we chose a "Repeat Mating" between FTCH Craighorn Bracken and our Holly for our litter this year. And, what a grand outcome! We have 7 YELLOWS and 3 BLACKS.

Holly's June 10, 2002 Litter:
Altiquin Dogs - Holly
Holly's Pedigree (online or download in Word 2000) and Holly's Photo:
a combination of UK FTCH Pocklea Remus / UK FTCH Haretor Mark of Drakeshead + International FTCH Theoweir Turramurra Teal bloodlines.

The SIRE is FTCH Craighorn Bracken (click to view pedigree online), owned by Mr. Tom Smith of Scotland, one of the top national and international working Labrador Retriever dog trainers. This link includes a photo of FTCH Craighorn Bracken.

This litter brings together strong 'line breeding' on both Pocklea Remus and Ballyellery Adder lines. Both of these sires have produced some of the very best working Labradors in recent times. From this litter, we have kept 4 pups: DRUM, KATE, ROCK, and RED. They are the pick of the litter.

Holly's Litter from 2001:
*Pups Retained for Further FT Training* Altiquin Dogs - Holly
Holly's Pedigree (online or download in Word 2000) and Holly's Photo:  a combination of UK FTCH Pocklea Remus / GB FTCH Haretor Mark of Drakeshead + International FTCH Theoweir Turramurra Teal bloodlines.
The SIRE is International FTCH Ulstare Oak (click to view pedigree online), owned by Mr. Willie Berry of Northern Ireland, one of the top national and international working Labrador Retriever dog trainers. The DAM's sire, UK FTCH Pocklea Remus, the 1991 UK Retriever Champion, is by far the most influential sire of the modern day with seven of his progeny competing in the 2000-2001 UK Retriever Championship.

Elly's Litter:
*One Male
Retained for Further FT Training*
*All Others SOLD*
Elly's Pedigree (online or download in Word 2000):  a combination of International FTCH Ulstare Oak + International FTCH Theoweir Turramurra Teal lines.
The SIRE is FTW Strong Blabe (click to view pedigree online), owned by Mr. David Templar of Countryways Gundogs in England. FTW Strong Blabe is of the FTCH Moorfield Drake / FTCH Tasco Spinner and FTCH Raughlin Sparrow + International FTCH Ulstare Oak and International FTCH Theoweir Turramurra Teal lines. FTW Strong Blabe, as a 3-year-old, is one win short of becoming a UK Field Trial Champion and a superb prospect for future UK championship winnings.

The quality of these pairings means many things. Their intelligence, their calm and reassuring nature, as well as their loyalty will go unquestioned. But, more than this, the superb combination of past and present champions means that these pups WILL influence future generations of retriever champions. All in all, characteristics greatly coveted in a hunting companion, trial competitor and/or breeding stock.

A Pup's Life at Altiquin Acres:       back to annual litters
As you know pups learn the most in life in the first 8 to 12 weeks. For this reason Altiquin Dogs feel it is vitally important to introduce them to every aspect of living with humans as is possible. Our 3 small sons (under 6) help us with this. Always supervised, they sit in with the dam while she nurses her pups and cuddle the pups when she needs a well-deserved break. Our young boys are instructed in gentleness and responsibility. Their daddy, Paul Toal, is an excellent role model in every aspect of animal care and training.

Our pups experience a radio playing in their kennel for 8 hours every day to get them accustomed to the bustle of noise. Altiquin trainer, Paul David Toal, lounges with them every day and plays with them *as their eyes open* so that the second thing they see in life is a human: a human who handles each and every one of them individually and lovingly.

Once the pups are on their feet *braving the world* they are fed outside our 200-year-old Irish cottage in order to accustom them to the sights and sounds there. Sound & gentle early education is essential in creating a superb hunting / trialing companion.

As soon as their size permits, Altiquin pups enjoy frequent supervised excursions (about 3 times a day) into the grasses and fields of Altiquin for a playful romp and early non-structured orientation. Soon they will join the larger dogs for supervised exercise to facilitate the development of more advanced *social skills*. Our hills and slopes keep them all very fit and healthy as they race around with their pack.

Regarding Details of Other Litters... Advertising on our Website and Our Disclaimer:    back to annual litters
Periodically, people approach us with news of their litters, pedigreed pups available for sale. These are not Altiquin pups bred, birthed, or raised by us; and, therefore, the guarantees we offer on our own pups do not apply. Since these litters are classified adverts on our website, we can not and do not vouch for the quality of the working pedigrees nor the pups advertised in these listings.

Kindly contact the individual breeders DIRECTLY to inquire about these litters, the working abilities in the bloodlines, suitability as pets, etc..., and to purchase these pups.
