Holly's September 12, 2004 Litter: This
year we chose Tess Lawrence's FTCH WILLOWYCK RUFF as our stud. Not only
did he place 2nd in the British Championship 2003, he was also THE Top
Retriever for the following season (2004). We had 8 BLACKS. They were
all big, strong pups. Our camera jammed while filming this litter. We
have yet to recover the prints.
We
have kept 3 pups: 2 dogs and 1 bitch for ourselves. We have started
working with them and they all have a very strong drive for retrieving.
We will train them to Field Trialing Standards and compete with them.

A
Pup's Life at Altiquin Acres: back to annual litters
As you know pups learn the most in life in the first 8 to 12 weeks.
For this reason Altiquin Dogs feel it is vitally important to introduce
them to every aspect of living with humans as is possible. Our 3 small
sons (under 6) help us with this. Always supervised, they sit in with
the dam while she nurses her pups and cuddle the pups when she needs a
well-deserved break. Our young boys are instructed in gentleness and responsibility.
Their daddy, Paul Toal, is an excellent role model in every aspect of
animal care and training.
Our
pups experience a radio playing in their kennel for 8 hours every day
to get them accustomed to the bustle of noise. Altiquin trainer, Paul
David Toal, lounges with them every day and plays with them *as their
eyes open* so that the second thing they see in life is a human: a human
who handles
each and every one of them individually and lovingly.
Once
the pups are on their feet *braving the world* they are fed outside our
200-year-old
Irish cottage in order to accustom them to the sights and sounds there.
Sound & gentle early education is essential in creating a superb hunting
/ trialing companion.
As
soon as their size permits, Altiquin pups enjoy frequent supervised excursions
(about 3 times a day) into the grasses and fields of Altiquin
for a playful romp and early non-structured orientation. Soon they will
join the larger dogs for supervised exercise to facilitate the development
of more advanced *social skills*. Our hills and slopes keep them all very
fit and healthy as they race around with their pack.
